Glens 'bitterly disappointed' as IFA rejects appeal against ex-Celtic man's red card

John Herron - 3-match ban.

Q Radio Sport

Glentoran have hit out after the Irish FA rejected an appeal against a controversial red card for midfielder John Herron.

The former Celtic player was dismissed for a tackle against Glenavon last month and will now be suspended for three matches.

The Glens issued the following statement on Wednesday night:

"At this evening's meeting of the IFA Appeals Committee, John Herron's appeal against his recent red card v Glenavon was rejected. That means John is now suspended for our next 3 matches - against Ballymena United, Crusaders and Coleraine.

"Despite a very thorough appeal by the club, referee Keith Kennedy and assessor John Ferry maintained their original position and this was supported by the committee.

"Glentoran FC thanks the committee for taking the time to hear the appeal but the club is bitterly disappointed that despite independent television footage we will be without a key player who the club maintains committed no offence on the day."

Northern Ireland boss Michael O'Neill is due to announce his squad on Thursday afternoon for next week's games against the Republic and Austria.

However, one name on the panel has already been confirmed - Oxford United winger Gavin Whyte!

His club couldn't quite wait for the official announcement and tweeted news of his call-up on Wednesday.

Northern Ireland Under-19s manager Stephen Frail has unveiled his squad for three U19 Euros qualifiers coming up later this month.

Northern Ireland is hosting a mini tournament from 14 to 20 November as part of the first stage of qualification for next year’s UEFA U19 European Championship finals in Armenia.

And in the Group 9 games Northern Ireland will come up against Poland, Serbia and Kazakhstan.

First up for Frail’s boys is a match versus Poland at Shamrock Park in Portadown on Wednesday 14 November (7pm start).

However, the group gets under way earlier that day when Serbia take on Kazakhstan at Stangmore Park in Dungannon (2pm).

Matchday two will see Northern Ireland come up against Serbia at The Oval in Belfast on Saturday 17 November (7pm). On the same day Poland and Kazakhstan will lock horns at Stangmore Park (2pm).

And their final group game is against Kazakhstan at Shamrock Park on Tuesday 20 November with a 1pm start. The Poles and Serbs will meet at the same time at The Showgrounds in Coleraine.

The top two in the group will advance to join top seeds Portugal and Germany in the elite round draw on 6 December.

In March's elite round seven teams will qualify to line up alongside hosts Armenia in the finals next summer.
